Level IV - Intermediate Reading
(Simple short stories)
Duration: One year
Students in Level IV will be able to
Read short stories, Sakhies, essays, and poems with relative ease, understand the text and be able to answer questions from the text
Do counting up to 100 in Punjabi
Develop understanding of the basic concepts of Punjabi grammar.
Materials:
1. Punjabi Diaan Mehkaan-1
2. Counting poster 1-100
Suggested Instructional Activities: In 45-50 minutes, you should be able to;
1. Start the day with one lesson in Punjabi Diaan Mehkaan -1 every week. Practice the vocabulary words in class. The students must copy the words. Work on one story/essay each day. Read the story loud to/ with the students. Discuss as you read. Ask the students to summarize what they understand from each paragraph. Teach difficult words. At the end of each story are numerous follow-up reading, writing and grammar activities. Do some in class and assign the rest for homework.
2. You may also want to assign some common words as spelling words. Choose the words that the students will use in their writing often. Assign homework activities with these spelling words (write three times each, use each word in a sentence etc.)
3. Make sure the students at this level are familiar with the colors of the rainbow, and counting numbers up to 100. You may choose how and when you work with these concepts. For example, you may want to teach colors for 2-3 weeks, then you may teach about 10 numbers each week. Focus on grammar concepts as much as possible.
4. The students should be able to role play in class to develop oral Punjabi skills, for example, you may discuss problems they face at school. Choose topics like Your Favorite Day of the Week, Your Favorite Holiday etc. for the students to speak on the topic.
5. Create a Punjabi Dictionary with the new vocabulary words learned each day. Ask the to draw pictures for the new words.
6. Half an hour Homework for Punjabi should be assigned for the week. They may write or copy poems and stories for homework from books or newspapers for long term projects . Students must read Punjabi at home everyday for 10-15 minutes.
7. Keep contact with the parents, and keep a record of the students' performance and progress in your Teacher Record Book.
OTHER SUGGESTIONS:
1. Sharing of homework in class to develop oral Punjabi language skills.
2. Students may translate English stories into Punjabi and vice versa.
3. Give dictation in class.
